Great Ocean Road

Day 1 - Sunday November 7th

We picked up our car this morning and headed out on the M1 – negotiating the 5 lane motorway (good job it was Sunday!).
Although it took quite a bit longer than we were expecting, we finally got onto the Great Ocean Road and had some great views of long sandy beaches.

Best of all though, at a point where Marg had only just said “This looks like koala country”, we finally saw our first wild koalas. Even better – there were a couple of adults and a small joey. Fluffy and unbelievably cute!

We continued to Apollo Bay where we’re staying. It may be Sunday but Apollo Bay seems quiet and relaxed, with a great harbour, a long sandy beach backed first by sand dunes and then by rolling hills, and a good selection of restaurants and shops. It may just be the ideal holiday location!

As we wandered back to our hotel after an exploratory walk, we saw these wooden sculptures which caught our imagination.

Tomorrow we’ll drive further along the Great Ocean Road. Hope the weather stays fine!
